12 Burgh Island Causeway 2025

Devons most sought after address

South Devon is glorious, Bigbury on sea is special in many ways but being right at the end of a South Devon Road has slowed down the march of commercialisation and mega-crowds. The village has become a venue for those 'in the know' for holidays - quiet, with a fantastic beach for children, enough surf for the part-time surfers, kite surfers etc. We have a great pub available on the Island (The Pilchard), and for those staying at the Causeway the club offers all you need - great food, pool, gym, terrace. There are also excellent pubs and restaurants in surrounding villages. Salcome is only 20-25 mins away, under an hour to Paignton Zoo and lots of attractions.

Don't leave without a ride on the tractor! Walk across the beach and have a pint and perhaps eat at the Pilchard Inn (c1336) https://www.burghisland.com/the-pilchard-inn/ and then come back on the tractor!

Paignton Zoo Environmental Park is a great day out, a large zoo with some fascinating animals built along one side of a big hill, there is a lot of walking. It has an excellent children's zoo, visit www.paigntonzoo.org.uk

Dartmoor Zoo is through into the National Park North of Ivybridge visit https://www.dartmoorzoo.org.uk

For a less exotic but still animal based day out, Sidmouth (about an Hour and a quarter away) is home to the Donkey Sanctuary(www.thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk)

Plymouth has things to do, a great Marina with The National Marine Aquarium (the UK's largest) https://www.national-aquarium.co.uk and a Rockfish restaurant next door.

For water sports at Bigbury Bay contact Discovery Surf School https://discoverysurf.com
'One of the best surf schools in the UK' Coast Magazine

Further south, we love the restaurant and gardens at Hotel Endsleigh on the Tamar thepolizzicollection.com/hotel-endsleigh/
The shell grotto is spectacular, and there are great views across the Tamar Valley, followed by a nice drive back through the Dartmoor National Park.

For those like to 'Do' something, there are two distilleries where you can make your own gin.
Salcombe Gin is fascinating (https://www.salcombegin.com) (https://www.facebook.com/SalcombeGin) and run classes where you are shown how gin flavours are built. Salcombe Gin is a short walk from the Creek car park. Devon Rum is also along the same road for those looking for variety!
In Torquay there is also The Gin Nest (https://www.facebook.com/theginnest/)

The excellent Crab Shed restaurant is based in the Salcombe Creek car park, and very recently Rockfish has opened in a converted boat shed at the head of the creek.

At the end of the day you really can't beat sitting with a drink and watching the tides, tractor and life of the beach!
